    Zeke's horse kicked up plumes of dust as he spurred it down the canyon's narrow trail. Bullets whizzed past, pinging off the rock walls. He risked a glance back—the marshal's posse was closing in, hot on his trail.

    C'mon, ya damn nag! Zeke growled, leaning low over his saddle.

    Up ahead, the trail split, with one fork vanishing around a bend and the other leading up a steep incline. He wheeled his horse towards the uphill path without hesitation.

    Thaddeus let out a bellow. We've got you cornered, Caldwell!

    At the top of the rise, Zeke pulled up hard on the reins. A sheer rock face blocked the trail ahead. Trapped.

    Get down off that horse! Thaddeus roared, his posse fanning out in a half-circle below. No more runnin'!

    Zeke's eyes narrowed, fingers hovering over the butts of his twin Colts. I ain't goin' back to that cellar, Colburn. Not alive.

    Thaddeus leveled his rifle. Don't be a fool, boy. Your road ends here.

    A bead of sweat trickled down Zeke's temple. He scanned the imposing rock face, his mind racing. There had to be another way out.

    You hear me, Caldwell? Thaddeus' voice echoed off the canyon walls. Toss down your guns and come down with your hands up!

    Zeke spat on the dusty ground. You know I don't surrender, Colburn. His gaze snagged on something above. A narrow ledge, barely visible from below, cut across the rock face—a desperate chance.

    Stubborn to the end, just like your daddy. Thaddeus cocked his rifle. Don't make me do this the hard way.
