    CHAPTER ONE

    New York City.  1974.

    They’re here.  Oh, Sweet Jesus!

    I was in the residence of Jake and Judy Hillerman, a married and retired couple.  The two-story Harlem house they lived in was tidier than the set of a 1950’s sitcom.  Jake was an electrician and a D-Day survivor.  Judy was a stay-at-home Mom, or, if you prefer, Dear Reader, a Domestic Engineer.

    I don’t mean to stereotype, but I don’t imagine there are many snowflakes who are interested in the life of a private eye. 

    Jake and Judy had two sons, Joe and Justin.  They were serving their country in ‘Nam.

    It was dusk, October, the snow had yet to fall, but the weather was cold enough to encourage agoraphobia.

    I stood behind a shivering Judy, who was peeking through a gap in their living room curtains.

    I’m started writing these memoirs in 2019.  I’m the polar opposite of a politically correct navel-gazer, but I’m no insensitive clod, either.  People are people.  We all have red blood and we all have white bones.  We all have the same biological and emotional needs.  The stupid things that separate us.  Religion.  Politics.  Culture.  Our skin color.
