    Prologue

    In a Cape Cod beach town, a woman in her fifties is halfway between her young adult children and her elderly parents. She is married to a beautiful man who understands her well. Her body is a wonderland, filled with memories of taffy, clam strips, and beachcombing. The woman and her husband have fetched their grown children from the train station and are heading to a small house they rent for a week every year. They are put on earth a little space to learn to bear beams of love. The daughter asks about a poem by William Blake, which she believes is called The Little Black Boy. The mother doubts if it is okay, but the daughter sees it as both crushingly beautiful and terrible. This one week, they are together, embracing the beauty of love and the challenges of being human.

    The narrator and her husband are in a trance as they try to clean up a toilet that is rising up to the rim. They hear a clanking sound from the pipes and a giant air bubble pushing the contents of the toilet bowl up and over, sloshing onto the floor like a waterfall. The narrator is shocked and yelling at their husband, who tells them they are knee-deep in sewage.

    The family is at their cottage, where they have been staying for about an hour. They are aware of the ancient septic system and have a framed calligraphy admonition hanging over the toilet.
