The warm summer evening breeze carried the sweet scent of jasmine through the open window of young Frida Kahlo's bedroom in Coyoacán, Mexico. At eight years old, she lay bedridden, her tiny frame ravaged by a recent bout of polio that had left her right leg withered and her once boundless energy sapped. As she stared listlessly at the ceiling, her gaze fell upon a beautifully crafted ceramic tree of life hanging above her bed, a cherished gift from her father.
The intricate details of the tree, with its vibrant colors and intricate carvings, captivated her. She traced the winding branches with her eyes, marveling at the skill of the artisan who had created such a masterpiece.
