Harley and the Stolen Splendour (Dragon Pets #3) - Anita Sachlikidis
Harley stood by the window facing her painting easel, warm afternoon sunlight streaming in and scattering off specks of dust in the air. She tucked an unruly curl behind her ear, unfazed by the paint that smudged on her cheek.
She was working on a painting for her school’s Annual Art Gala.
The Art Gala was a night to showcase work that students had created in class throughout the year. It was also an opportunity for students in the school’s special Art Academy to show off the skills they had learned during the year.
Along with the other students in the academy, Harley had been invited to create a standalone piece that would be displayed at the Gala for everyone to admire. Harley was super excited! She loved to draw and paint in her spare time and this was her chance to create something AMAZING.
In her mind, she saw the finished painting clearly - a bold, bright picture exploding with colour, something certain to invite admiring looks and gushing compliments.
The problem was that today, the colours on her palette simply REFUSED to match the ones in her head. Everything she tried turned out WRONG.
When she tried to mix emerald-green, it came out as a pale, washed-out shade that looked like dead grass. Not to mention that she’d completely run out of her favourite cherry red shade.
Harley glanced across at her cat, Hikari, lounging on the arm of the sofa with one sleek grey paw dangling over the edge. If only she could be that relaxed! She took a deep breath and tried again.
Harley squeezed a dab of blue onto her palette, swirling her brush to mix. The paint on her tray immediately turned a muddy greyish-brown.
She gave up, throwing her brush down in frustration. It was no good! She’d just have to pack up for today and hope that there would be time to finish the artwork before the end of the week.
Harley ate her dinner moodily, stabbing at the food on her plate with more force than was necessary. After dinner, she got into trouble for snapping at her little brother and when she talked back to her parents, Harley was sent to bed early.
She didn’t care. Today felt ruined anyway. She just wanted to press a reset button and start again tomorrow.
As the rest of the household wound down and the lights switched off one by one, Harley lay in bed trying to shake off the remnants of her bad mood.
Time ticked over slowly, but Harley couldn’t sleep. Tossing restlessly, she kicked her sheets off and pushed them as far down the bottom of her bed as she could reach. Her skin felt warm and prickly.
The moon was high and full in the night sky, a glowing round orb that filled her room with pale light. All was
