    Chapter 1 of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, titled Nightmare, begins with Malcolm X recounting a vivid childhood memory from his early years in Lansing, Michigan. He describes a Ku Klux Klan raid on their family home, where his father, Earl Little, valiantly defends his family against the hooded figures. This traumatic event deeply impacts young Malcolm, instilling in him an early awareness of racial hatred and injustice.

    Malcolm reflects on his family's struggle as African Americans in a predominantly white society, noting the hardships they faced due to racial discrimination. He recalls his father's activism as a local leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), inspired by Marcus Garvey's Pan-African movement. Earl's outspokenness and advocacy for black pride and self-sufficiency earn him both admiration and animosity in the community.

    Despite their father's efforts, the Little family faces constant threats and harassment from white supremacist groups, culminating in their home being burned down by the Black Legion, a Klan-affiliated terrorist organization. This devastating event forces the family to relocate to East Lansing, where racial tensions continue to affect their daily lives.
