    Two figures wandered the ruins,

    Hand in hand at first,

    Until novelty and nations drew them

    In different directions.

    They had seen so much,

    Ancient and modern,

    Antique and valued,

    Decrepit and decayed,

    From ghettoes to gulags,

    From circuses to centrifuges,

    From fibulae to figurines,

    Both medieval and byzantine.

    The terrace, tools, and trinkets

    Of corporate and feudal,

    Of democratic and imperial,

    Of capitalistic and socialist

    Ideals: all wrapped up tightly as one.

    Are these ideas Antiques or Artifacts?

    He emphasized the words, lost in thought.

    Neither knew,

    Neither knew what to do.

    To the South they’d scoured the ruins

    For forgotten treasures and lost manuscripts.

    The lofty colonnades and idealistic statuaries

    Held up by canopies of encompassing ivy.

    The earth had begun to take back her temple,

    As they watched on, silent.
