    NOTE

The author, a cub reporter, was trying to uncover a complex story involving narcotics, cops, voodoo, and thirty-eight murders in the South Bronx. Sydney Schanberg, a metro editor of the New York Times, advised the author to keep knocking on doors and going around. After eight months, people opened up, and the author had their story. However, a judge issued a gag order prohibiting anyone with firsthand knowledge from speaking with the press. Despite this, some people were willing to share their knowledge for a price. The author traveled to Idaho, Washington State, and Pennsylvania, knocking on doors, taking people to dinner, and working the phone. As the case progressed, legal documents filled with fascinating revelations began to pile up, allowing the author to get behind the scenes and into the minds of many characters. Despite the gag order, the author was able to write a true story about people caught up in horrific events with firsthand insight, authority, and accuracy.

    PART I

    Michael’s Story

    One

On December 15, 2022, Michael Kohberger, a graying sixty-seven-year-old, felt out of sorts after a week of travel across the country. He had just flown from Philadelphia to Seattle and caught a shuttle flight into a cold Pullman (Washington)-Moscow (Idaho) Regional Airport. His son, Bryan, had just finished his first semester as a PhD candidate in criminal justice at Washington State University. Bryan had been a mediocre student at a hardscrabble high school in Pocono Valley, Pennsylvania, where Michael had been the maintenance man. After graduation, he stumbled into a local community college but eventually transferred to DeSales University, where he earned a BA in psychology, switched to criminal justice, and received his master's. With the support of his DeSales professors, he was accepted into Washington State University's nationally acclaimed doctoral program. This was an astonishment for Michael, who had never gone to college. The fact that his son was well on his way to a doctorate was a cause for immense pride, as it seemed even more remarkable when Michael allowed himself to look back at the painful tumult of Bryan's teenage years. Maryann, Michael's wife, was always more gentle and outwardly caring to their two older daughters and young Bryan than he was.

Michael, a father, decided to make a trip to Pullman, Washington, and then back to Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, to show his son, Bryan, that he cared and wanted to see what was up with him. The journey promised proximity and could be filled with revelations. However, Michael felt something was up and they started to argue. Bryan had initially agreed on a straight line route, but now he insists they should drive south through
