You Should Plant Fruit Trees and Shrubs
Growing your own food is one the most basic things you can do become more self-reliant and save money. For many people having a large garden or a flock of chickens provides extra food for their family. Both of those require a fair amount of time every day and week.
What can you do when you don't have the ability to get out and weed, or if you have to travel frequently and can't care for animals?
You can grow your own fruit! Most fruit trees and bushes require only minimal care throughout the year. They don't need to be fed each day, and they can go much longer between watering than delicate garden veggies.
Once you plant a fruit tree or shrub it will return year after year to produce for you with almost no effort on your part!
In fact, if you grow appropriate varieties for your area most fruits require just a bit of pruning once established!
Planting fruit trees is one of the best things you can do on your homestead. They take minimal care once they get established and will produce year after year.
Even if you have a very small space you can still plant dwarf trees or grow espaliered trees in pots. If you have more space, fruit trees can become integral parts of a productive food forest. No matter who you are, you need to plant fruit trees.
What Fruit Trees Should You Grow?
One of my favorite parts of gardening is planning out what I want to grow. Deciding what you like and want is one of the most enjoyable aspects.
Sometimes it may feel hard to know what will grow well in your area or what you have space for. The following sections include some things to consider before heading out to buy your fruit trees.
The first step before you plant your fruit trees is planning. There are a few vital pieces of information you will need to know.
First, what is your USDA Hardiness Zone? If you don't already know your zone, it's pretty easy to find online. There are multiple sites that let you put in your zip code and tell you your zone. I like to use garden.org/nga/zipzone.
The garden zone you live in
