Axolotl Care for Kids - Ciel Publishing
INTRODUCTION
Axolotls are becoming popular pets, but like any animal, they require lots of preparation and research before you bring one home. It’s easy for their cute smiles and frilly gills to steal hearts, but they should never be bought on a whim. Thus, anyone who adores axolotls should do plenty of research before choosing to get one.
These aquatic amphibians are actually a species of salamander. Most salamanders look like axolotls as juveniles, but they eventually lose their gills and develop lungs so they can live on land. However, axolotls are neotenic, meaning they remain in their aquatic larval stage for life.
While most salamanders need a terrestrial environment with a water dish, axolotls need an aquarium. Axolotls spend their whole lives underwater, so their environment in captivity is similar to a large fish tank.
These unique creatures are the type of pets that you can admire but not touch. Luckily, watching them swim around and eat worms is fascinating enough to make up for their lack of sociability. Many axolotls will even swim to the surface at the sight of a human because they love being fed.
Even though axolotls need little attention from their humans, their tanks can be tricky to set up and maintain. So, they require an owner who can be patient and meticulous when it comes to preparations and care.
Keep all that in mind when deciding if an axolotl is the right pet for you. If you’re interested in a pet axolotl, it’s time to learn more details about their characteristics, tank setup, behaviors, and needs.

CHAPTER 1: CHOOSING YOUR AXOLOTL
Even though axolotls are popping up everywhere in pop culture, they’re not a new animal. These amphibians have existed for at least 10,000 years. They used to be abundant in Mexico, inhabiting two lakes: Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco.
Unfortunately, Lake Chalco was drained to prevent flooding, and the area surrounding Lake Xochimilco is affected by pollution, climate change, and human development. Thus, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild, but they’re thriving in captivity.
Captive-bred axolotls cannot return to the wild because their immune systems develop differently than wild axolotls. So, pet and wild axolotls cannot thrive in the same environment. With the rough state of the axolotl’s natural habitat, it wouldn’t be safe to release them there
