    Little Defective Things

    Woods:

    Controller officers were always disguised. The masked woman grabbed the ordinary child and dragged her past a broken tree, but the girl’s parents fought.

    Mother kicked the controller, and tossed her daughter inside the fifteen-year-old RV. Rust flaked onto the dirt road.

    Her husband revved the engine.

    They sped through the main road to reach the cabin. The controllers had no jurisdiction once they reached state lines.

    It’s not safe here, Father said. The controllers have taken over. Governor Tab says, as long as we stay out of the major cities, don’t commit crimes, and don’t use their school systems, we’ll be allowed sanctuary.

    One Week Later:

    The ordinary girl stared at the scarlet words imprinted on her left foot. Defective.

    Underneath was a serial number. She danced through the cabin’s main room full of small boxes, opened one, and pulled out a black computer tablet.

    A reporter, T. Grayson, smiled back. His face appeared chiseled and perfect, and his eyes sparked. He looked like a beautiful version of Father. By decree, the ordinary ones need to be destroyed. These lab rejects are monsters. Only extraordinary controllers should be left alive. I have chosen not to have natural children after my son mouthed off. My new son is perfect.

    The ordinary girl turned her device off and walked into another room.

    The perfect ones tried to grab me again, and the others like me, the girl whispered to herself.

    Father strung homemade garland created from stray pine cones across the ceiling of a tiny makeshift bedroom in a cabin. This place is better than the camper.

    I liked the camper because we get to travel, the girl said.

    It’s peaceful here. Mother opened a small box and pulled out books. We can buy more novels, and maybe a couple of toys. I can bring out my old microscope.

    Father smiled and tacked up a couple of children’s drawings. And you will have friends here. There are seven other families like us in the other cabins.

    Will the controllers find us? the girl asked.
