BHASKAR BORA

We cannot control what the universe throws at us but how we react to those curve balls defines who we are and what we make out of our lives. Just when life seemed rosy and the sun was shining, he sustained a severe spinal cord injury in July 2019 following an operation, which left him with paralysis of both legs, a non-functioning right hand and a long stay in the hospital, eventually leading to a forced medical retirement from his medical career and a wheelchair in place of a sports car. He had to undergo multiple operations but is now permanently disabled. Two months after his injury he was also diagnosed with cancer of the Thyroid for which he needed further operations. Poorer financially but richer in life experiences, he is now a voice for the disabled. He wrote his first book 'The Second Chance in Life' as an honest reflection of his life experiences to motivate people that every adversity can still be turned into an opportunity. That it is important to be filled with gratitude and appreciation for all the things that we take for granted. He also blogs on his websites www.drbhaskarbora.com & www.thesecondchanceinlife.com In his own words, he says "The sun was shining on my life, everything looked rosy. Money was plenty and worries scarce. I had a dream career, a beautiful family, the blessings of my parents and the love of my friends What more could I ask for? When things go well in life, you assume you are in control. I thought so too. But when faced with unprecedented situations and overwhelming emotions, it is important to maintain trust in yourself and keep moving forward. When storms come, an eagle flies higher in order to rise above the turbulence, while a mouse hides in a corner. I had to become that eagle and soar higher, not be cornered and crushed in the storm of life. Believing in myself was the only way. Maybe this was a lesson. Maybe this was a lesson to find a bigger purpose and achieve a bigger dream. Miracles, big and small, happen every day but often we are not receptive enough to understand and appreciate them. My books are a testament to all the different things that I have learned and experienced and now want to share with my readers honestly and practically. Join me in this journey."

Isustained a spinal cord injury 5 years ago with permanent disability with very limited mobility. Being a first-generation immigrant with no family support in this country, my wife Mili and my young daughters Angelina and Nikita became my lifelong carers, without any other help. Over the years I have realised what they have gone through. I have suffered for myself but they have suffered on my behalf and without any help. That is what most caregivers do, working unselfishly round the clock, making lots of sacrifices and often go unrecognised.

This book is, therefore dedicated to all you selfless carers and caregivers, with a hope to be able to signpost you to more help and assistance in your journey.

    Chapter 1: Introduction to Caregiving

Welcome to Beyond Duty: The Joys and Challenges of Caregiving This book is a heartfelt guide designed to provide practical advice, emotional support, and a sense of community to those who have taken on the vital role of caregiving. Whether you are caring for an elderly parent, a child with special needs, or a loved one with a terminal illness, this book is here to guide and support you through every step of your journey. As a caregiver, your role is crucial, immensely challenging, and rewarding. Through this book, we aim to acknowledge your efforts, address your concerns, and equip you with tools to enhance both your caregiving experience and your well-being.

    Definition of Caregiving:

Caregiving encompasses a wide range of activities and responsibilities undertaken by an individual to assist someone who is unable to fully care for themselves. This could be due to age, illness, disability, or other conditions. The role of a caregiver extends beyond mere physical assistance; it often involves providing emotional, psychological, and sometimes financial support to ensure the well-being of the person in their care. Caregiving can be performed by family members, friends, or professional caregivers, each bringing unique challenges and rewards. Regardless of the relationship, the essence of caregiving lies in the unwavering commitment to the health and happiness of the care recipient.

    Importance of Caregivers in Society:

Caregivers play an essential role in society, often stepping in where healthcare systems and social services fall short. They provide not only day-to-day care but also emotional and psychological support, becoming a lifeline for many. The contributions of caregivers help reduce the burden on healthcare facilities and allow individuals to remain in their homes and communities, maintaining a better quality of life. Caregivers often act as advocates for their loved ones, ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention and support. Their dedication and compassion significantly impact the lives of those they care for, highlighting the indispensable role they play in our society.

Caregivers often work tirelessly, behind the scenes, ensuring their loved ones' needs are met. This dedication often goes unrecognized, yet it forms the backbone of many families and communities. By providing care at home, caregivers help reduce the demand on hospitals and long-term care facilities, allowing healthcare resources to be allocated more efficiently. This not only benefits the care recipient but also society as a whole, emphasizing the profound impact caregivers have on the well-being of our communities.

Overview of Different Types of Caregiving:

Caregiving can take many forms, each with its unique challenges and rewards. Understanding the different types of caregiving can help caregivers identify resources and strategies tailored to their specific situations. In this section, we will explore various types of caregiving, providing an overview of what each entails and the specific challenges associated with them.

    Elderly Care:

Elderly care involves caring for ageing parents or other elderly individuals who may be dealing with chronic illnesses, mobility issues, or cognitive decline. Caregivers in this category often assist with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation. They also manage medical appointments, medications, and sometimes more complex medical needs. The emotional support provided by caregivers is equally important, as many elderly individuals experience loneliness and depression. Elderly caregivers must navigate the delicate balance of maintaining their loved one’s independence while providing necessary assistance.

    Special Needs Care:

Caregivers for children or adults with special needs often have to manage complex medical routines, therapy appointments, and educational requirements. They also work to create an environment that supports the individual’s physical, emotional, and social development. This type of caregiving requires a deep understanding of the specific needs of the care recipient, including communication strategies and behavioural interventions. Caregivers must be advocates for their loved ones, ensuring they receive appropriate educational and therapeutic services. The emotional bond between the caregiver and the person with special needs is often profound, highlighting the significant role caregivers play in their development and quality of life.

    Terminal Illness Care:

Providing care for someone with a terminal illness involves not only managing physical symptoms but also offering emotional and psychological support. This type of caregiving can be incredibly intense and requires a deep well of compassion and resilience. Caregivers must navigate the complexities of pain management, medical treatments, and end-of-life care, often in collaboration with healthcare professionals. The emotional toll of watching a loved one decline can be overwhelming, making it essential for caregivers to seek support and respite. Despite the challenges, many caregivers find profound meaning and purpose in providing comfort and dignity to their loved ones during their final days.

Caregivers often must make difficult decisions about treatment options and end-of-life care, requiring a balance of empathy and practicality. The emotional support provided by caregivers is crucial, as they offer a comforting presence during a profoundly challenging time. This type of caregiving often leads to a deepened sense of connection and understanding, highlighting the invaluable role caregivers play in providing compassionate care.

    Common Challenges Faced by Caregivers:

Caregivers often face numerous challenges that can affect their physical, emotional, and financial well-being. Recognizing these challenges is the first step toward finding effective solutions. In this section, we will delve into some of the most common challenges faced by caregivers, offering insights and strategies to address them.

    Physical Strain:

The physical demands of caregiving can lead to fatigue, chronic pain, and other health issues. Caregivers often neglect their own health while focusing on their loved one’s needs. Tasks such as lifting, bathing, and assisting with mobility can be physically taxing, leading to muscle strain and injury. Caregivers must prioritize their physical health by incorporating exercise, proper body mechanics, and seeking assistance when needed. Regular check-ups and preventive healthcare are essential to maintaining their well-being.

    Emotional Stress:

The emotional toll of caregiving can be significant, leading to feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety. The constant worry about the well-being of the care recipient can be overwhelming. Caregivers may feel a sense of loss for the life they once had and experience emotional exhaustion. Caregivers need to acknowledge their feelings and seek support through counselling, support groups, or trusted friends and family members. Emotional self-care practices, such as mindfulness and relaxation techniques, can also help manage stress.

    Financial Burden:

Many caregivers face financial challenges, including out-of-pocket expenses for medical supplies, treatments, and caregiving services. Balancing work and caregiving responsibilities can also impact income and job stability. Caregivers must navigate the complexities of insurance, financial aid programs, and budgeting to manage their finances effectively. Seeking financial advice and exploring community resources can provide much-needed support in managing the financial aspects of caregiving.

    Time Constraints:

Caregiving responsibilities can consume a significant amount of time, leaving little room for personal activities and self-care. Caregivers often struggle to balance their caregiving duties with other responsibilities, such as work and family obligations. Effective time management and prioritizing tasks can help caregivers find a balance. Utilizing respite care services and delegating tasks to other family members or professionals can also alleviate some of the time constraints.

    Social Isolation:

The demands of caregiving can lead to social isolation, as caregivers may have limited opportunities to engage in social activities and maintain friendships. The sense of isolation can contribute to feelings of loneliness and depression. It’s important for caregivers to stay connected with their social networks, even if it means finding new ways to interact, such as joining support groups or online communities. Social engagement is crucial for maintaining emotional health and finding a sense of community.

    Emotional Impact of Caregiving:

Caregiving can evoke a wide range of emotions, from deep satisfaction and love to frustration and grief. It’s important for caregivers to acknowledge these emotions and seek support when needed. In this section, we will explore the emotional landscape of caregiving, providing insights into common emotional experiences and strategies for managing them.

    Feelings of Guilt:

Many caregivers experience guilt, feeling that they are not doing enough or are not providing the best care. This can be exacerbated by societal expectations and personal standards. Caregivers may feel guilty for taking time for themselves or for not being able to meet all the needs of the care recipient. It’s important to recognize that caregiving is a demanding role and that it’s okay to seek help and take breaks. Accepting that perfection is unattainable and focusing on doing the best one can is essential for managing guilt.

    Frustration and Anger:

The constant demands and lack of personal time can lead to frustration and anger. Caregivers may feel unappreciated or resentful of the sacrifices they have to make. These feelings are natural and should not be suppressed. Finding healthy outlets for expressing frustration, such as talking to a trusted friend, engaging in physical activity, or practising relaxation techniques, can help manage these emotions. It’s also important to communicate openly with the care recipient and other family members to address any sources of tension.

    Grief and Loss:

Caring for a loved one with a terminal illness or watching someone decline in health can bring profound feelings of grief and loss. Caregivers may mourn the loss of the person they once knew and the future they envisioned. Anticipatory grief, which occurs before an expected loss, is common and can be emotionally draining. Seeking support through counselling or support groups can help caregivers navigate their grief. It’s also important to allow oneself to grieve and to find ways to honour and remember the care recipient.

    Sense of Purpose and Fulfillment:

Despite the challenges, many caregivers find a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment in their role. The opportunity to make a positive impact on a loved one’s life can be incredibly rewarding. Celebrating small victories and recognizing the difference they are making can provide motivation and a sense of accomplishment. Caregiving often strengthens relationships and creates lasting memories, adding to the sense of fulfilment.

    Emotional Resilience:

Building emotional resilience is crucial for managing the ups and downs of caregiving. Developing coping strategies, such as mindfulness, meditation, and positive self-talk, can enhance emotional resilience. It’s also important to set realistic expectations and to focus on the aspects of caregiving that are within one’s control. Cultivating a support network and seeking professional help when needed can also bolster emotional resilience.
