Introduction to Storytelling
The wellspring for these narratives is the imagination of the participants—those who create the stories and those who contribute as characters within them. It is storytelling that provides spontaneous adventure, poignant romance, constant wonder, and grandeur. The collaborative nature of storytelling makes it different from other pastimes. It's simple to take a book off a library shelf and enter a world once visited by a mystery writer. It's more difficult to take a medieval role-playing scenario off a shelf and create a new work, one that brings enhancing life to those long-gone days. In storytelling, players do not merely roll dice or move pieces. Their characters see, feel, act. The players themselves triumph and suffer and wonder and thrill to the events as experienced by their on-stage entities. As authors who conceive their characters and guide them through the game, the storytellers relish in the knowledge that they power their novels and odysseys with the might of all their players.
By definition, these works of storytelling must engage. A well-drawn plot is more vital in storytelling than the unfolding plot in any other type of collaborative writing, for there are no previous drafts of the real
story, no second chances for missed dialogue. To rewrite for a character with poor depth one would need to change the actual events that have already been fleshed out by the characters and refined during play. In storytelling, the plot twists and turns from page to page, never revealed in their entirety to the readers until the moments of experience are upon them. These writings fulfill the destinies of events. The author lays the framework and can influence the flow to some extent, but no part of the whole can be preplanned. No one can predict the outcome of a fight, a debate, or a romance. Every adventure holds the balance of life and death, and every conversation reveals nuances of character. The only certainty lies in the fact that the storytellers will make this story different from any other. In storytelling, the reader becomes a partner in crafting a unique edifice of words and deeds.
1.1. The Art of Storytelling
Think of a story about anything, from a funny thing happened to me on the way to the grocery store
to a one-hour television drama to a feature film by your favorite director. What do all of these stories have in common? What is it that makes them compelling enough to hold our interest? It is the unique voice of the storyteller and the fascinating narrative structure of the story being told. With each new story that you tell (or write), it is like a piece of yourself is embedded within it. But, as with any craft to which you wish to devote your energies, it requires thought and attention to learn the skills and techniques of storytelling. And so we come to the purpose of this book: to provide a framework that you can follow, within which is the knowledge gained from millennia of people telling stories. With practice, you too can wield the power of the storyteller.
Crafting and telling stories is an essential part of human communication, from our most basic explanations of where we have been and what we have experienced, to the most sophisticated tales that weave together both powerful emotional experiences and abstract morals. The very act of passing knowledge from one generation to the next occurs through storytelling. It is not a coincidence that it is easier to remember stories than facts and figures. Material woven into a narrative context
