Introduction to the Art of Writing
From earliest times storytelling has been nurtured not by professional classes interested in preserving the literary heritage, but by those whom it has supported: the wife embroidering the tapestry, the grandmother spinning yarns for her grandchildren as they worked about her feet, the quiet man whose tales of the past reinforced the beliefs of his relatives gathered around their nightly fire. During the long dark hours a well-told myth could both illuminate and reinforce the deep, underlying emotional message it contained. Everyone – even those who didn't speak – was eventually involved. Pictorial storytellers work in different ways to those who use words, but the essence of their art is the same. The survival of our narrative heritage makes sense – not because the stories exist, but because they offer a means to a vital democracy to everyone who uses them.
This series is written by a professional storyteller working with traditional narratives. I am not an academic, so words are used to communicate with genuine individuals rather than specialists. I fly the flag for my art and thoroughly believe in its importance. Writing and creating are modern interpretations of this ancient craft, and helping you to unleash your voice is of the most personal importance. Our initial stories were not read – they passed from one generation to another through the voice and the ear. Our society abides by complex rules, which protect and preserve the oral heritage, but – to use yet another anachronism – to ensure its survival in the modern world we must be both proactive and self-reliant.
