    Family Love

A bond that’s stronger than any other,

A love that lasts forever and ever.

It starts with a simple hello,

A hug and a kiss to make life glow.

Family love is a special thing,

A treasure with no price it will bring.

The joy of being near family,

A feeling of comfort that won’t let you be.

The warmth of their love can make all the sadness melt,

Our hearts that much closer as our lives we felt.

A special connection like no other,

That builds us up, again and again and again.

    Our family is our foundation,

A love that we’ll never go without.

For no matter what life brings,

Our family always stay strong, and helps us sing.

    Introduction

Allow me to speak truthfully, as a young black woman growing up for decades on Oakwood Bayou dirt roads outside the nearest city of Dumas, Arkansas and never knowing what it was like to wear a store bought dress until I was into my teens, I never thought I’d write a book about me. First, I am not a writer. I am a scholar. Frankly, years ago I didn’t consider my life all that interesting or worthy of sharing with the world. Then, out of nowhere so it seemed, I started getting more calls and emails than usual for interviews about my life and career journey as news traveled that I was retiring from my career in higher education.

Many interviewers resounded with the same question: So when are you writing your book? or why are you retiring? What legacy do you leave behind that you are most proud of? My go-to response was always, I’m working on the answers to all those questions. Oh, I have several professional and academic books ¹to my credit, but not a book about my life. I even wrote and published a family recipe vanity book and recently a book of poetry, Poems From My Heart: A Spiritual Journey now available online. The Ward Family Recipes was a collection of favorite recipes from family members, sisters, parents, grandparents and of course my own.

Reflecting back to 1993, I remembered a book that I started, Stretchin’ Til It Fits about the lives of my sisters and our experiences growing up as 11 black sisters in the South. I never finished it because I struggled to navigate my own stretching and fitting story not to mention the lack of consensus about the story we wanted to tell. So, I decided to figure out who I am and how I got here before attempting to tell their stories. The original 1993 story was presented as a play at Iowa State University for a qualitative research course credit while I was working on my doctorate during a film and arts festival. The play attracted standing room only for over 200 attendees! Reviews indicated that the audience wanted more than a play, they wanted a book about our lives.

The title of this book didn’t come to me until after it was finished. I tried many different titles, but Against All Odds I Did It perfectly captured the themes of my spirituality, resilience, personal growth, and global leadership that I aimed to convey including the fortitude to finish this imperfect book with the encouragement, support and efforts of friends, colleagues and family. You know who you are. I omitted names for fear I might forget someone. This book only hints at the formidable challenges I faced during my formative years and how they propelled me to survive becoming a black woman in America, a world leader, and a professor of education in a system never designed for me or those like me.

This book is a personal story woven together as a testament to the extraordinary nature of my everyday existence that some people find fascinating in an ever-changing world. Within these unfolding pages, you’ll find my inside and up-side down stories of triumph, resilience, love, heartbreak and self-discovery.

I hope this book will help others who find themselves looking for strength when the going gets tough. Each chapter unfolds a precious memory, revealing the remarkable adventures and experiences that shaped my journey toward becoming the accidental professor who is me, myself and I with all my
