What do controller developers need to prepare for in the future of mobility?

What to keep in mind in the software-driven vehicle (SDV) race

Three months after Apple announced it was abandoning the development of its self-driving electric car, the Apple Car, it is again rumoured to be considering a collaboration with electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian. The idea is that Apple would focus on semi-autonomous systems, but would leverage Rivian's automotive expertise, including brakes and powertrains. As automotive functionality becomes increasingly software-driven, not only are traditional OEMs joining the SDV movement, but also tech companies such as Apple, Huawei, and Xiaomi. The strategy is to leverage their software capabilities in the IT and consumer electronics markets.

However, it's important to keep in mind that more software means more risk of vehicle hacking. In response to vehicle cybersecurity threats and to create an environment where vehicles can be operated safely, the UN's International Standards for Automobiles (WP.29) has established relevant regulations (UN R155/R156), and in Korea, the Motor Vehicle Management Act has newly established provisions related to the 'vehicle cybersecurity management system' and 'software update'.

To comply with the 'cybersecurity management system' provisions of the amendment to the Automobile Management Act, it is necessary to protect the electronic control unit itself or defend the vehicle from external attacks, and to establish a vehicle security operation centre (vSOC) to continuously manage vehicle security. These security measures are being implemented in software, and the requirements will continue to evolve. Therefore, controller developers (Tier) must be able to develop and manage cybersecurity and controller software effectively to respond flexibly to the requirements. This is where the need for a software platform comes in.

AUTOSAR, the international standardised platform for vehicle software, is an SDV must-have

The purpose of the software platform is to standardise the software structure that was difficult to respond to various needs and changes, and to promote ease of development and universality. Tier needs to positively review the application of the software platform for software development and management efficiency, reusability and scalability, and controller competitiveness.

    Considerations when applying AUTOSAR

When applying AUTOSA, it is necessary to consider whether the functions are ready to meet the OEM's requirements, whether it supports the microcontroller unit (MCU) to be used, whether it provides effective engineering services and reasonable costs, and whether it can enhance software reusability and business scalability. While previously only the functionality of the controller itself was considered, cybersecurity, functional safety, and software over-the-air (OTA) updates should also be considered when selecting the best AUTOSAR solution.

Once you've selected a solution, you'll need to determine what services and components the controller requires within the AUTOSAR Basic Software (BSW). Typically, when you purchase AOTSA, you receive the Configuration Tool, BSW, and Runtime Environment (RTE), while the AOTSA Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL) is delivered by the MCU vendor or included in the AOTSA package.

From responding to self-regulatory laws to enhancing global competitiveness, for sustainable growth

The automotive industry is constantly evolving, with the rise of high-performance electronics for SDVs, changes in electrical and electronic (E&E) architectures, and software sophistication. Amidst these changes, it is important for Tier to maximise the efficiency of software development and management. By applying AUTOSA, the convenience and reusability of software development increases, enabling Tier to respond to the amendments to the Korean Automotive Management Act and secure competitiveness in overseas markets. In other words, AUTOSA is indispensable to survive in the SDV era because it can effectively respond to the requirements of various global OEMs.

AUTOSAR can be categorised into Application Software (ASW) and BSSW. ASW deals with controller-specific functions, while BSW deals with the general purpose functions of the controller. With the current shortage of electronics software developers, working with a company specialising in AUTOSAR can be a good solution. The software resource-intensive BSW areas such as communication, memory, diagnostics, cybersecurity, OTA, etc. can be outsourced to a specialist like Pescaro, while the ASW areas related to controller-specific functions can be handled by Tier's internal software developers.

If you are struggling with limited software development resources, Pescaro can provide you with the most practical BSW solution optimised for your needs.
