Mountain Man Summer Camp - Elsie James

    CHAPTER 1

    HALLIE

    Dammit.

I close the tab for the Hotel at Brew by Brewer and toss my phone into what should have been my overnight honeymoon bag. It isn’t possible that there’s no vacancy here. This resort is huge and they’re going to have to find me a room, that’s all there is to it. I march in through the lobby with my head held high.

My heels click on the mosaic tiled floor and my white gown drags on the floor behind me. I don’t miss the mumbled whispers and sharp looks that come my way. But surviving my current situation propels me forward. I bypass every person in the massive lobby and don’t stop walking until I’m at the front desk.

I press a hand to my temple and take a deep breath. I need to talk to your manager, please. Your website is telling me that this place is full. I know that’s not possible because a person can only have so much bad luck in one day. Also because it’s a Tuesday morning and this is the middle of nowhere. How many people could possibly need a room way out here? So I need you or a manager to please find me a room. Any room will do. I’m not picky. I blink at her, eyes wide.

Uh, sorry, we are booked. She blinks, flustered from what I can only imagine is the strangest of energies I’m putting off. If you can please step aside, I was in the middle of helping him.

    Helping who?

Umm… Him. Her voice turns up at the end as she gestures over my shoulder.

Sorry to cut the line, but this is urgent, I blurt over my shoulder without bothering so much as to turn my head.

The woman blows out an exaggerated breath. Okay, I’m gonna go see if my manager is available. Excuse me for just a moment. The woman disappears through a door behind the counter and I say a silent prayer.

Please. Please have a room. Please.

Congratulations. The deep voice coming from behind me snaps me back to the present.

On what? I turn to look up at the mountain of a man standing beside me and wonder how in the world I didn’t see him before. With his massive frame and chiseled jawline, this dude is hard to miss. In another situation, I’d be taken by how stunningly handsome he is, but now isn’t the time for that.

The man’s mouth curls up at the corner into an undeniably sexy smile. I don’t miss the way his eyes burn into mine as he lets out a chuckle. On your wedding. His eyes run down my body.

I look down at my dirty, now tattered, wedding dress and a sarcastic laugh escapes my lips. Believe it or not, it didn’t end up happening. The lace overlay has a massive tear from where it caught on the window frame as I lept out of the window of the bridal suite… The condition of my dress matches
