Introduction
This is a photo of Marie Curie. When or where this photo was taken is unknown.
Marie Curie’s life was not easy. She had to face hardship, coming from a family without great financial means, and also as a woman who wanted to go into the field of science in a country that would not permit her to do so. She had to go through many roadblocks and hurdles, such as going to an illegal underground school, to achieve what she wanted. She kept strong under tragedy and scrutiny, and in her passion and strength, she continues to save thousands of lives even almost a hundred years later.
Chapter One: Birth & Early Childhood
The Education of a Girl in a Russian-dominated Poland
Marie Curie, a world-renowned physicist, was born Maria Sklodowska
on November 7, 1867, while Poland was still under the Russian Empire. Her parents were Bronislawa Sklodowska and Wladyslaw Sklodowski. Not only was Marie Curie born as the fifth Sklodowska child, but she was also the youngest girl. Her older siblings were Zofia, Józef, Bronislawa, and Helena.
Education was considered to be something of utmost importance in the family, to the point that handling and operating schools was also a big thing between them. Marie Curie’s paternal grandfather, Józef Sklodowski, was the principal of a primary school in Lublin, one of the largest cities in Poland. Bronislawa and Wladyslaw Sklodowska were also well-known teachers in Poland at the time. Bronislawa Sklodowska was once handling a prestigious boarding school in Warsaw. However, Bronislawa resigned from her position after Marie was born so that she could better focus and raise the children. Wladyslaw Sklodowski, on the other hand, was the director of two secondary schools for boys in Warsaw. Wladyslaw Sklodowski taught mathematics and physics, which are the two subjects Marie Curie later went on to
