    Introduction

The book opens with Dr. Attia sharing a strange dream that haunted him during his residency at a prestigious hospital. In the dream, he frantically tries to catch falling eggs with a basket. He doesn't know who throws them, but he can't catch them all, leaving him feeling helpless.

This dream reflects Attia's growing frustration with cancer care. As a surgeon, he performed life-extending surgeries, akin to catching the eggs in his dream. Yet, many patients eventually succumbed to the disease. They lived longer but not necessarily better.

The dream became a turning point for Attia. He realized focusing solely on catching the eggs (extending life) wasn't enough. Medicine needed to identify the source of the eggs (the root cause of cancer) and prevent them from falling in the first place.

This is the core idea of Outlive: true longevity isn't just about living longer, but living a healthier and more fulfilling life in your later years.

The Long Game: From Fast Death to Slow Death

Dr. Attia's journey towards understanding longevity began in medical school. He witnessed deaths from both fast and slow causes. Fast deaths, like accidents or infectious diseases, were the norm until the early 1900s. Today, slow deaths from chronic illnesses are more common.

Attia calls these chronic conditions the Four Horsemen: diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's. These diseases seem sudden, but they're the result of slow-growing problems like hidden tumors that build up over time.

Modern medicine excels at preventing quick deaths, but it struggles with longevity. Dr. Attia wants to change that. His book, Outlive, offers a new approach: delaying or preventing these Four Horsemen so we can live long, healthy lives, not just long, sick ones.

In short, Dr. Attia believes we need
