Summary of Swan Song by Elin Hilderbrand ( Keynote reads ) - Keynote reads

    Prologue

Nantucket Police Chief Ed Kapenash has announced his retirement from the island after a heart attack in February. He was admitted to the hospital three times in the past two years for chest pain and was referred to as the widow-maker. His wife, Andrea, urged him to retire now, fearing he might not survive another summer. However, Ed felt guilty for playing fast and loose with his health and decided to retire in the fall.

Ed's last official day of duty is Monday, August 26, and his replacement, Zara Washington, has moved into her housing and is eager to take over. Andrea has planned a big retirement party for Ed at the Oystercatcher, with official hoopla arranged by Governor Healey.

Ed is enjoying a night out with his family, including his son Eric, best friends Addison and Phoebe Wheeler, Jeffrey and Delilah Drake, and his daughter Kacy. However, Coco, who works as the personal concierge for the Richardsons, has been left to work. Ed believes that the Richardsons, who were once part of the Castaways group, have been abandoned by the Richardsons, who were younger and more attractive.

Ed and Andrea, a couple, dine at Ventuno, a restaurant in a historic downtown residence. They enjoy a beautiful evening, but Ed feels melancholic as the summer is ending and his career is fading. Addison, the sommelier, serves Ed a bold yet subtle Barolo, which he finds divine. Ed is more interested in food, and his wife, Andrea, whispers about the Richardsons, who have been a source of inspiration for him.

Ed orders the Fiorentina steak, the finest steak on the island, and the Richardsons, who have been a source of inspiration for him. Andrea is proud of Ed's weight loss, jogging, and meditation. They made it to the end of the summer without major incidents.

Ed's tenure as chief of police on Nantucket has been challenging, as the island has experienced a doubled population and a surge in summer residents, short-term renters, and day-trippers. Traffic, parking tickets, and a mix of urban and suburban kids with designer drugs and entitled attitudes have caused trouble, including domestics, vandalism, drunk driving, overdoses, and accidental deaths. Ed worked a case out in Monomoy half a dozen years ago that he still believes was murder, though they never quite figured it out.

At a dinner party, the Chief and his wife, Andrea, enjoy a dessert sampler of apple crostata with cinnamon gelato, baba au rhum, and cannoli. They discuss their children, Kacy and Coco, who seem to have cooled down. The Chief is surprised by the music and the dance floor, and the idea of retirement seems promising. They plan to travel, fishing, and even take a job as Eric's first mate.

Ed's phone rings, indicating an emergency at the station. The Chief, who is not interested in the news, contacts his dispatcher, Jennifer Speed, who informs him of a fire in Pocomo. The fire is attributed to the Richardsons' house, which was a total loss. The Chief learns that Coco, a friend of Kacy's, was missing from their yacht party. The Chief is relieved that everyone else on the boat is accounted for, and the harbormaster called them.

The Chief is shocked to learn that Coco is missing and that the Richardsons' house burned down. He tries to believe it's a prank, but he knows it's real and is on his way to tell them the truth.

    The Cobblestone Telegraph

Blond Sharon, a renowned switchboard operator in Nantucket, is now the subject of gossip after her husband, Walker, left her for his physical therapist, Bailey from PT. Despite her family's strong reputation, Sharon is a mother and a stay-at-home mom, with her teenage son, Robert, having type 1 diabetes. She has her sister, Heather, who is a lawyer with the corporate finance division of the SEC in Washington. Heather is the voice of reason, offering Sharon a chance to reinvent herself. Sharon's secret lifelong desire is to become an author, as she has always been interested in other people's stories. Since the death of local novelist Vivian Howe, there has been no one to write about the summer dramas on Nantucket. Blond Sharon's sister Heather is the only one who has ever done with a secret, keeping it secret and ensuring her family's safety.

Sharon enrolls in a virtual creative-writing workshop led by retired Florida Atlantic University English professor Lucky Zambrano. The class consists of two students, Willow and Nancy, who are both about Sharon's age and working in similar environments. Lucky instructs Sharon to observe two individuals and dramatize a scene between them to develop into a story. Sharon is inspired to write about her experiences and the people she observes.

Sharon arrives at the Steamship Authority ferry terminal to observe the people coming to town. She notices that the casual travelers are unstylish, but she notices a young woman with a unique look. She notices a gemstone in her nose and a tattoo of a flamingo on her left shoulder and another that looks like a gecko just above her ankle. This woman is more than a casual tourist; she is an arrival for the summer. Sharon is inspired to create a dazzling second act for herself as a published author and to explore the world around her.

Sharon, a young woman, arrives in Nantucket with a duffel bag and a friend, Kacy Kapenash. She is about to offer her a ride to her destination when she sees a second young woman, Kacy, who has honeycolored hair and wears slim white jeans and a navy blazer. Kacy is driving a black Suburban, and Sharon realizes that the person driving the Suburban is the chief of police, Ed Kapenash. Sharon's phone rings, and she learns that Eddie Pancik, Nantucket real estate royalty and Sharon's male counterpart in the gossip department, has just closed on Triple Eight Pocomo Road, which is on the water due to rising harbor levels. The house is predicted to be underwater in 80 to 100 years due to neighborhood bylaws prohibiting lifting it up.

Eddie introduces Sharon to Kacy, who is a self-described party animal who wants to join the Field and Oar Club. Sharon is proud of her new friend, but she doesn't know if it happened. Kacy then reappears at the luggage cart, and Sharon follows her to the waiting Suburban.

As Sharon describes the heartwarming scene between the two women, Romeo approaches her, asking her what's up. She wonders if Romeo is single and if she can be in his short story. Romeo grins and says that it will be scandalous, but Sharon thinks it's fiction. She writes in her notebook: Romantic hero—Romeo Scandalous Steamship Guy? It feels a little unlikely, but she reminds herself that anything can happen.

    Sherry’s Living in Paradise

Coco, a woman living in paradise, is at a bar in St. John, Virgin Islands, where she is surrounded by people who are both chasing something and running from something. She is unsure about leaving her life, but the song Two Tickets to Paradise is playing. The couple is overheard asking if Kenny Chesney comes in, but Coco insists it's not about her. They mention that they ordered champagne and were gussied up, but Coco is hesitant to leave.

At the bar, a man named Bull Richardson introduces himself as a movie producer. He owns a beverage-distribution company that supplies water, soda, and sports drinks throughout Indonesia. Coco is intrigued by this information, as he has invested in movies like The Main Vein and Snark, which were big overseas. Coco is glad that Bull Richardson's producer credits don't include movies like Top Gun and Avatar, which means he might be open to taking a chance on a first-time screenwriter.

Coco is unsure if the couple is trying to bribe her or if they are just looking for a place to stay. She is also curious about the Richardsons' background, as they have been renting in Peter Bay, aka Billionaire Hill, and are planning to move there.

Coco, a high school girl from Rosebush, Arkansas, is working at a bar and meets Harlan, a lineman who works for a company charging forty-one cents per kilowatt hour. She decides to pitch her screenplay to Bull Richardson, who is a lineman and a friend of hers. Coco's screenplay, titled Rosebush, follows her passion for film, literature, art, music, and culture.

During her senior year, Coco attends a screenwriting program in Little Rock and takes a screenwriting seminar with
