I rolled out of bed, rubbing my bleary eyes, and groan at the sound of my alarm. Today was my first day as a waitress at the local diner, and I was determined to make a good impression. After all, in my chance to prove that I had what it takes to juggle final year university while supporting myself.

I pulled on my uniform, a hideous bright red polo shirt with the diner’s logo emblazoned on the front, and headed out the door. As I made my way to the diner, I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. What if I messed up someone’s order? What if I spilled coffee all over a customer’s lap?

I quickly forgot my fears as I stepped into the bustling diner. The smell of bacon and fresh coffee filled the air, and the sound of chatter and clinking silverware filled my ears. I took a deep breath and headed to the counter to meet my boss, a gruff-looking man named Hank.

Hey there, Joanne, Hank said, nodding at me. Glad to have you on board. You’ll be starting off with table service, so just make sure everyone’s happy and fed, and you’ll be golden.

I nodded, feeling a little more confident. Table service? I could handle that.

And then I saw him. James Darrion. The captain of the Yale hockey team, known to his hockey fans as Puck, and easily the most handsome man I’d ever seen. He was sitting at a booth near the window, his dark hair perfectly styled and his blue eyes sparkling with mirth.

My heart skipped a beat as I approached him, feeling suddenly very aware of my rumpled uniform and messy ponytail.

Hi there, can I get you anything to drink? I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Hey, Joanne, James said, flashing me a dazzling smile. Just water for now, thanks. And maybe some of your famous pancakes.
