In the chapter Good is the Enemy of Great
from Jim Collins' book Good to Great, the central thesis revolves around the notion that organizations often settle for being good instead of striving to become great. Collins argues that this complacency stems from several factors, primarily a lack of transformative leadership and a failure to confront the harsh realities of their current situations.
Collins introduces the concept by contrasting good companies—those that are profitable and stable but not outstanding in the long term—with great companies, which achieve sustained excellence over time. He asserts that many good companies fall into a trap where their successes, whether financial or operational, breed a sense of satisfaction that prevents them from pursuing more ambitious goals. This phenomenon, according to Collins, is what makes good
the enemy of great.
To illustrate this point, Collins and his research team conducted a rigorous analysis of companies that made the leap from good to great. They identified a common pattern: these companies were
