Chapter 1
Why I Wrote This Book
When I owned a boarding kennel, a couple came to me to board their Border Collie. He was a doctor, she was a homemaker, and they were upset with their dog’s bad behavior.
Neither one of them had been raised around dogs, but they thought it would be a good idea for their son to have a dog. So, when they saw an ad in a newspaper, they went to see about getting a puppy.
The breeder assured them that the puppies’ parents and grandparents were of good stock, and the puppies were well-bred. The breeder was probably telling the truth, but what he didn’t do was inquire about the family’s home and lifestyle.
This family lived in a subdivision, they were not very active people, and their dog was becoming destructive and neurotic. But there was a simple explanation. Border Collies are high-energy, highly intelligent working dogs who need a job to do.
Had this couple taken time to figure out the right dog for them, they could have avoided the heartache of adopting a dog that didn’t fit their way of life.
That’s why I wrote this book. To prevent prospective pet parents from bringing home a dog that is a poor fit for them.
