This week we discuss Taking Aim at Gun Violence with guests Shari Runner, President of the Chicago Urban League; four youth activists at the March for Our Lives; and Kris Brown, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The host for this episode is Don Cravins, Jr., Senior Vice President for Policy and Executive Director of the Washington Bureau.   From the National Urban League, For The Movement discusses persistent policy, social, and civil rights issues affecting communities of color.   Mentioned in this Episode: March for Our Lives Gun Control and Violence Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Sacramento Urban League Stephon Clark Chicago gun violence Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Columbine High School shooting Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting Youth activism Zion and Zaire Kelly Mental health Communities of color activism to end gun violence Illegal trafficking of guns into urban communities Need to change the paradigm of gun violence Continued civic engagement is needed to vote out lawmakers who don’t support gun control. Over 116,000 people are shot annually in the U.S. About 38,000 people are killed by gun violence in America. We have an epidemic of gun violence in our country. Parkland is raising the issue of gun violence in schools. Mass murders account for 1% to 2% of gun violence in this country. The vast majority of gun violence occurs in communities that look a lot different than Parkland, where the most dangerous part of your day could be walking to and from school--not being at school. Eradicate gun violence now. One in 5 guns are sold without a background check. Cut gun violence in half by 2024 through background checks, renewal of the assault weapons ban, and enactment of extreme risks laws. When fatal car accidents were prolific in the 1950s and 1960s, lawmakers responded to save lives. The same should be done for gun violence.   Contact and Follow Web: #ForTheMovement Email: podcast@nul.org Twitter: https://twitter.com/NULpolicy Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NULPolicy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/NULPolicy Marc’s Twitter: @MarcMorial Don’s Twitter: @DCravins Kim’s Twitter: @kayellea Jordun’s Twitter: @_jordun
