Description
The Context of White Supremacy hosts our 4th installment on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur was an active member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, convicted of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman ever listed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List, and an author. She remains the focus of controversy as a Marquette University mural depicting her was derided and removed this week. Our previous session revealed Assata's youthful hijinks as she ran away from home as a young teen. Thankfully, her immature decision-making didn't carry a heavy penalty; she made it back to her mom safely. She continued to describe her inhumane experience in greater confinement and how the other black prisoners had been groomed to think of her as a hulking, black super predator. The toxin of Racism contaminated her relationship with her attorney and aunt, Evelyn Williams; the latter eventually discontinued legal representation of her niece. And we got a brief jailhouse romance between she and Kamau. Keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
