Description
Freedom Wins One in Troy- A little NY town provides safety for a runaway slave. On April 27th, 1850, the Vigilante Committee in Troy, New York, prevented a Sheriff and a Slave Catcher from extraditing one of their own, a runaway slave named Charles Nalle, who had made his escape north in 1848 through the Underground Railway to what he hoped was freedom and the chance for a new life. Blacks and whites combined in a number of dangerous efforts to free Nalle that day, and they succeeded in doing so, scoring one small step for freedom in a turbulent time for America. The citizens of Troy later raised today's equivalent of $14,000 to buy Nalle's freedom.
