Austin, Central Florida, Auburn, and Texas, he got his first shot as a head coach with Iowa State in 2007. Two years later, he became the head coach of the Auburn Tigers, and in 2010, reached the pinnacle of college football, winning the BCS National Championship, defeating Oregon 22-19.
