Description

How do you get started as an artist? That’s the topic of conversation on Thriving Women Artists this week. Join Ping, Sarah, and Dorien in the first of three podcasts designed to help you get started as an artist. Find out why space, time, and tools are important, and find out why our three hosts wanted to become artists.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Set out time for yourself, it can be 20 minutes an evening. You don’t need to do it 9 to 5 every week day. Just find a little time to create in your busy life, whatever amount of time you can fit in.
You could have access to a big studio, or just a desk in your bedroom, you need space to create. Not just a physical space, but the mental space to allow yourself to be dedicated to be creative. Making art can seem unimportant, but you should tell yourself it’s important to you. It can be part of self-care, which makes it important.
Think about how you want your physical space to be. Do you work well in a clean quiet environment? Or can you work in messy one with noise and distractions?
You don’t need the best tools to create good art. The only thing you need is a piece of paper and a pencil. However, it can feel like a nice motivating treat to start with something nice and fresh. There is no right tool for the job.
It can be scary to put your own work out there on Instagram. The more you see people like your work you can gain confidence. You can use it as a perfect portfolio piece, or you can just use it as a playground. Remember that likes and follows aren’t an indicator of success.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Most children are artists I think’
‘You don’t have to wait for the perfect mindset, just doodle and have fun’
‘Learn to create without someone telling you what to make’
