We’re celebrating the first day of San Diego Design Week with the second episode of our special series on inspiration and the senses. In this episode, I dive into inspiration and vision with Paul Basile, a designer, developer, fabricator, general contractor, and artist. Paul shares how he began his journey with design, what led him to create Basil Studio, and how his work has evolved over the years. We talk about the many exciting, new projects he’s taking on and how he’s incorporating different disciplines and materials. Designer, developer, fabricator, general contractor and artist, Paul Basile, is the multi-talented founder and principal of BASILE Studio, a prophetic Southern California design firm known for its exhaustive attention to detailed craftsmanship. BASILE Studio’s perpetual drive to mix traditional design methods with expert fabrication and modern-day mechatronics (mechanical engineering + electronics), has earned them a reputation as one of the nation’s most versatile design firms.
As a fourth-generation builder himself, Paul Basile started his career with a line of handcrafted furniture in the early 90s. The doors to BASILE Studio opened in San Diego in 1994, evolving into a full-service design and fabrication studio in 2008. In 2016, Basile opened his second art gallery, basileIE, followed shortly after by his custom furniture line, BASILE Built.
Paul Basile’s projects have earned wide-ranging critical acclaim including accolades from the American Institute of Architects, San Diego Architectural Foundation, and Hospitality Design Magazine. Paul’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Inc. Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Interior Design, and more.
