Joe Fowler (Disneyland’s construction supervisor and a former naval admiral) is on hand dressed as a sailing captain of the 1700s, with the Mousketeers appearing as his crew!1961:The King of Swing Benny Goodman returns to Disneyland with his big band for the start of Date Night.1966:On this Memorial Day, Disneyland throws a grand opening celebration for its newest Fantasyland attraction, "it's a small world." Inaugurated on May 28, the attraction was originally built for the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York. Honoring all children of the world, the attraction features the song "it's a small world (after all)" by Richard & Robert Sherman.Go listen to sleeping at last cover1997:The Disneyland parade The Lion King Celebration - running since July 1994 - gives its final performance.2006:The Disneyland Resort hosts the premiere of Disney/Pixar's Cars.2008:Disney and NASA announce that Buzz Lightyear (the Disney/Pixar character) will visit space for real when he becomes part of Discovery's crew on May 31. Lightyear is scheduled to take to space on Discovery’s STS-124 mission stowed inside a locker in the space shuttle's crew compartment. The toy astronaut will mark an educational partnership between NASA and Disney.2009:Disneyland treats guests to a preview of a new fireworks show called "Magical." The nighttime presentation features 750 discreet digital-control channels, Disney Air Launch system (which creates less ground-level smoke than the former system using black powder) and the addition of six high-beam lights shooting up behind the castle.2010:Songwriter (and Disney Legend) Randy Newman receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.2011:A new immersive water play area opens at the newly enhanced Disneyland Hotel. The centerpiece of the improved pool area reflects Disneyland's nostalgic iconography with a classic Disneyland block signage and monorail replica.Disneyland Resort celebrates the opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure with a special ceremony at Disney California Adventure park. Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel, performs "Part of Your World,"Disneyland officially launched Star Tours – The Adventures Continue with a gala ceremony in Tomorrowland.2019:Disneyland dedicates its newest addition - Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Galaxy's Edge is located to the north of Frontierland, where Big Thunder Ranch and backstage areas were located. In attendance at the dedication ceremony are CEO Bob Iger, Star Wars creator George Lucas, and actors Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Billy Dee Williams. The land will open to the public the following day.Topic 2 - News Detailed Renderings of New 12-Story Disney Vacation Club Tower at Disneyland Hotel released during a town hall webinar for neighborhood residents.
