Well it turned out the words Jurgen Klopp said to the 40-year-old after the match helped inspire what was an incredible season for the Shakers. Bury won promotion to League One after scoring an impressive 82 goals in 46 games. But what made that achievement all the more remarkable was the off-the-field problems that Ryan, his coaching team and his players had to deal with. And sadly for Bury, it’s got much, much worse since then. They’ve been deducted 12 points, their opening game of the new League One season has been suspended, and there is a real threat they could be expelled from the Football League. Ryan took the reluctant but understandable decision to leave for Plymouth Argyle, who will be looking to win immediate promotion back to League One this season. So, in a catch-up with Paul Wheelock, Ryan not only talks about his new job and his time at Bury, but also the support Jurgen Klopp has shown him since their first meeting 12 months ago, a shock visit from Kenny Dalglish, and what it was like watching Liverpool be crowned champions of Europe for the sixth time as a fan in Madrid.
