Today, July 11, the Church of God celebrates the Feast of St. Benedict of Nursia, the sixth-century abbot and father of the monastic life in Wester Europe. It would affect the spiritual and monastic life in the West for centuries to come.
At Monte Cassino, 80 miles south of Rome, he wrote his famous “Rule of St. Benedict,” prescribing a life of prayer, work, study, simplicity, and community life under one superior.
It summarized in his Rule (IV, 21) the monks’ program of life: Nihil amori Christi praeponere. Prefer nothing to the love of Christ.
Though known as a rule for monks, it is addressed to all those who seek “to do battle for Christ the Lord, the true King.” St. Benedict said that the fundamental, and even more, the sole objective of existence is the search for God.
St. Scholastica, Benedict’s sister, also embraced religious life as a nun.
