The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 7-6 in the first game of the Subway Series. The pitching matchup between Max Scherzer and Luis Severino was a dud with both pitchers exiting early and the bullpens having to hold it down. Luckily for the Yankees, their bullpen is the best in baseball and Clay Holmes had a gutsy performance to get out of some bases loaded trouble in the eighth. On the offensive side some guys who needed hits got them. Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Volpe all got big hits including two doubles by Volpe and a home run by LeMahieu. Giancarlo Stanton also went deep and it wouldn’t be a Yankees-Mets Subway Series game without some drama. This time it was Drew Smith getting ejected for a foreign substance violation. The second time a Mets pitcher has had that happen. The first was Scherzer. Then we discuss Anthony Volpe who was the subject of many conversations in recent days but apparently none of them were by the Yankees, according to Hal Steinbrenner. And finally, we preview the pitching matchup between former teammates Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole.
