The protagonist Pippin and his father Charlemagne are characters derived from two real-life individuals of the early Middle Ages, though the plot is fictional and presents no historical accuracy regarding either. Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in the extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. Awards: The 1973 nominated for 11 Tony Awards and won 4; the 2013 circus-themed revival was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won 4. It also received multiple drama desk and Drama League Awards both in 1973 and 2013 plus other awards.
