Show Outline:
In my coaching practice, there's something I encounter too frequently--people in the prison of perfectionism.
Writers who won't write, musicians who won't record, artists who won't draw or paint--or, at least, won't show their work to other people.
We believe our work must be perfect before we can show it to anyone.
The blog post
The business article
The novel
The painting
The software project
The simple journal or diary entry
The dream of an amazing life
It's not the fear of failure, it's the fear of criticism
Maybe it was parents or teachers who told you it must be perfect. It's a lie. There's no such thing!
If perfection exists, there wouldn't be software upgrades, new models of cars, 2nd editions of books
I could have just recorded 1 podcast, instead of 61 and counting until I get it right!
Imperfect work shared will change more lives than perfect work kept hidden!
My software development taught me: create a minimally viable product, launch, then improve
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. – Arthur Ashe
Set yourself up for victory, not failure.
Build momentum
Get feedback
Change course as needed
Stop waiting for all of the conditions to be right, all the lights to be green, all thoughts to be organized
You don't need more time, you don't need more money, you don't need more ideas
Just start!
Get feedback, make improvements along the way
Ms. Frizzle (The Magic School Bus): Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!
In my experience as a writer, speaker, musician--the work I thought was the most flawed is often the work that deeply touches someone's life. You have the ability to change the entire world--for one person!
Enjoy the process. Have fun!!
Put yourself on parole! Swing the gates wide! Set yourself free from the prison of perfectionism!
