As the effects of secularization on belief and practice are deepening, we continue praying along with the participants in the World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, Portugal, this week
Pope Francis urged a gathering of bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated persons, seminarians, and pastoral workers in Lisbon to stay in the boat with Jesus and revive their restless enthusiasm for spreading the Gospel.
"This is not the time to stop and give up, to drag the boat to shore or to look back," said the Holy Father, acknowledging the discouragement that can be experienced by Catholic leaders in secularizing societies.
The pope delivered an encouraging message in his homily for Wednesday vespers, or evening prayer,  gathered in the church of Lisbon’s iconic Mosterio dos Jerónimos.
Pope Francis spoke on the importance of adoration, saying Catholics are lost without Jesus.
"Priests, bishops, consecrated men and women, laypeople have to recover the prayer of adoration. It’s to be in silence, before the Lord," Pope Francis urged.
"Follow the example of St. Teresa of Calcutta, who, despite being involved in so many things in life, never gave up adoration even at times when her faith wavered and she wondered if it was all true or not."
