October is one of those months that’s packed with themes and activities. Three of those are Hillsboro Arts Month, HillsDOer Month, and the Annual Hillsboro Wishing Tree.
Our Featured Project is Recycled Bottle Cap Art at Quatama Elementary School! Since the spring of 2021, students at Quatama Elementary School have been collecting bottle caps of various sizes to use for a school-wide art project that is nearly complete. Quatama has long been known for combining art and environmental sustainability, and their Recycled Bottle Cap mural project is a perfect example of those efforts. Inspired by a grant the school won from the Captain Planet Foundation to install a Learning Garden, Sheila O’Leary - first grade teacher, Green Team Leader, and Master Recycler - came up with the mural project as a way to involve all students in beautifying the garden with recycled art. Classes came up with designs, painted display boards, and placed and affixed the bottle caps to the boards with screws. Nineteen murals were installed in August by O’Leary and her husband. There’s just one mural left to create and install - the Quatama “Q!” Look for that final piece this fall.
There will be no school on Friday, October 7th for a licensed non-contract day. School will resume for all students on Monday, October 10th.
