Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles  — it was a who's who of Billboard's top performers. This massive collaboration represented the best that music had to offer and the best America had to offer .... which was a muddled message, a pantheon of big egos, and uncertainty as to whether they'd helped anyone at all.
