Description

Tijuana No formed in Tijuana, Mexico in 1989. They play an eclectic blend of ska, punk, New Wave, and Rock. They are among the most important Mexican bands to blend ska into their music. Their 1992 ska-punk song “Pobre De Ti” is huge and remains an important ska song. Today we interview former Tijuana No singer/keyboardist Ceci Bastida. We go through Tijuana No’s excellent, politically-charged records and get some insight into their cover of The Clash’s “Spanish Bombs.” We talk about the 2 Tone ska groups that they loved and other influences they had like Bob Marley, Café Tacvba, Maldita Vencidad, Mano Negra and of course The Clash. We also talk about former Tijuana No member turned pop superstar Julieta Venegas—Ceci played keyboards with her from 2000-2008. We talk about Tijuana No’s attempt to break into the US late 90s ska market, their relationship to the Zapatista movement, why the topic of immigration frequently came up in their music (As well as in Ceci’s solo tunes), and we talk about some of the bands that Ceci got to see in San Diego as a teenager: General Public, Ziggy Marley and Tin Machine. We also talk about the incredible cover of Suicidal Tendencies’ “Institutionalized” that Ceci sang lead vocals on. Also, be sure to check out Ceci Bastida’s latest solo record, Everything Taken Away. An amazing album! Follow the series wherever you get your podcast. Ska no longer needs to be the butt of every joke. IDOS is flipping the narrative on this style of music that they love dearly. Hosts Aaron Carnes (author of "In Defense of Ska") and Adam Davis (Link 80, Omingone) chat with people in and outside of the ska scene to tell its stories, show its pervasiveness in culture, and defend it to their last dying breath.
