Description

We are up to an interesting pasuk , Devarim 33,12 which is the beracha Moshe Rabbenu gives to Binyamin Binyamin, called the Yedid/Dear one of Hashem. He dwells in serenity. The Shechina is always dwelling on him and dwelling between his shoulders. This refers to the fact that Binyamin was the one that merited the Bet Hamikdash to be built in his portion of land- where the Shechina always dwells. And he's called the Yedid/ dear one of Hashem. The Emek Davar says on this pasuk, “ טבע שבט בנימין וגדוליו להתהלך בדרך החסידות והפקרות למעלה מטבע אנושי בבטחון / The way, the nature of the tribe of Binyamin and their greats ֶ is to go on the way of the pious and to abandon themselves, more than nature, in the area of bitachon .״ The hiddush for me was that Binyamin was somebody that stood out in bitachon, of all the tribes. Where do we see this? One area, which he quotes from a midrash in the Yalkut Shemoni, is that before Nachshon ben Aminadav (from shevet Yehuda ) jumped into the Yam Suf, the one that actually caused him to jump in was someone from the tribe of Binyamin. A pasuk from Navi is cited to prove this point. This means that the splitting of the sea, which was a supernatural event, was actually triggered by Binyamin, something that's not well known. He goes on to the first two kings of Israel:The first king Shaul was from Binyamin, and David Hamelech was from Shevet Yehuda. In Shemuel 2, 1,17 when it talks about the lamentation that David Hamelech laments when Shaul died, he says, “ We're now going to have to teach the people of Yehuda bows and arrows.” What does this mean? Shaul died and suddenly we have to teach about bows and arrows? The Emek Davar says something fascinating: Now that Shaul is no longer alive and we no longer have the role model of bitachon, and Yehuda is taking over, we have to learn how to fight wars in a natural way. Binyamin stood out in the area of bitachon and therefore the Emek Davar says the tribe of Yehuda merited a kingdom. David Hamelech was a king, and kings fight wars. All the wars David Hamelech fought were natural wars. That was David Hamelech’s greatness. He fought wars in a natural way and relied on Hashem. But Binyamin was on a higher level. He therefore got the Bet Hamikdash , which was supernatural, with Hashem always dwelling on him, and total protection of the Bet Hamikdash. And he makes a very interesting poetic statement, based on a pasuk from Mishleh that says, כמים הפנים לפנים כן לב אדם Like the water has a face to a face ( when you look in the water, you see your face) so too is the heart of man. Meaning, people project onto others what is projected to them. But he puts a poetic twist on this, saying, כמים הפנים לפנים כך השגחת ה' על יראיו / Just like the face is reflected in the water, so too is Hashem’s Hashgacha on those that fear Him. Which means the more you direct yourself to Hashem, the more He dwells on you and protects you. So, because of his high level of bitachon, Binyamin received this special Bet Hamikdash - which was supernatural. There were miracles that happened every day in the Bet Hamikdash. There was protection, there were no flies, there was no decay, no one was bit by snakes in Yerushalayim… all of these wonderful miraculous events happened in the Bet Hamikdash because where the Shechina dwells, there is no negativity, there is no evil. Shechina brings beracha. Binyamin is that Yedid Hashem- and what makes him so dear? His constant bitachon. The more bitachon you have, the more the Shechina dwells on you and the more protected you are. This is not a commonly cited pasuk of Bitachon, but it’s on the Maharal’s list, and it conveys the message of the dear one, Binyamin, the Yedid Hashem that became that way due to his bitachon. Have a wonderful day.
