Description

Kevin Bui of Colorado has admitted to setting fire to a family's home in the dead of night, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a toddler and an infant. This act was fueled by Bui's mistaken belief that the family was responsible for stealing his cell phone, a belief which turned out to be unfounded.

Prosecutors alleged that Bui led a trio of arsonists and utilized the "Find My iPhone" app to trace his stolen phone's location to the vicinity of the victims' home in 2020. However, their investigation revealed that the house Bui targeted was not the right house, resulting in tragic consequences.

What began as a misguided pursuit ended in a coordinated arson attack, claiming the lives of five Senegalese family members, including two infants, in a fire that ravaged the area in 2020. Now, Kevin Huy Bui, at the age of 20, has pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder related to the deaths of the family members.

In a solemn courtroom appearance on Friday, 20-year-old Kevin Bui formally admitted to his role in the horrific slayings of Djibril Diol  , his wife Adja, their daughter Khadija , Diol’s sister Hassan, and her daughter Hawa Beye, Bui's plea deal with prosecutors secures a 60-year sentence in a state correctional facility, sparing him from an additional 60 criminal charges.

The fatal blaze, ignited by Bui and two accomplices, Gavin Seymour and Dillon Siebert, claimed the lives of five victims while three others narrowly escaped by leaping from a second-floor window. Bui, believed to be the mastermind, initiated weeks of planning for the retaliatory arson.

Armed with containers of gasoline and hockey-style masks, the trio broke into the home, doused it with accelerant, and fled as the flames consumed the property. Surveillance footage and cell phone location data incriminated Bui, Seymour, and Siebert, leading to their arrest in January 2021.

While Seymour, then 16, accepted a 40-year sentence after pleading guilty, Siebert, only 14 at the time, received a combined sentence of three years in juvenile detention and seven years in state prison for his involvement.

During Friday's court proceedings, Bui remained largely silent, offering only brief responses to inquiries from Judge Karen Brody. Notably absent from the courtroom were any family members of the victims, who opted to witness the proceedings remotely via livestream.

Kevin Huy Bui's sentencing is slated for July 2.
