Dr Borger also dives into the Concept of The Gap and the Gain by Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan, and their book of the same name.  She explains the concept of a) gap thinking, which is comparison of current state to an ideal future states, as well as b) gain thinking, which is comparison of current state to our own past self and state instead.  Dr Borger through examples illustrates the effects these ways of thinking have on our happiness and self talk, and urges her listeners to employ gain thinking.
