Description

We were initially doing pesukei Bitachon , then we did pesukim of Chisayon, which is seeking refuge, seeking cover, and now we're going to do some pesukim of kivoy , pesukim that have the word hope in them. We start with a pasuk in Yeshaya, 33,2 which is one of the pesukim of the Korbanot that we say in the morning: יְהֹוָ֥ה חׇנֵּ֖נוּ / God, please grace us. (The word Honenu/grace us, comes from the root of the word Hinam , which means for free ) Why should you grace us? Because, לְךָ֣ קִוִּ֑ינוּ / We hope to You , which means because we hope to You, we get what we don't deserve. הֱיֵ֤ה זְרֹעָם לבקרים֙ / God, be their strength in the mornings אַף־יְשׁוּעָתֵ֖נוּ בְּעֵ֥ת צָרָֽה׃ / Also be our salvation at a time of difficulty . In his commentary on this pasuk, the Chida writes, based on the Yalkut Tehilim תשלו , that even if the Jewish people only have the merit of hope, they are deserving of being saved- in the merit of that hope. That's why we say name of Hashem which is Rahamim, Honen , which means give us something for free that we don't deserve. We don't have the merits, but what gives it to us? Kivinu/ we hoped. We ask Hashem's help in the mornings, L’Hagid BaBoker Hasdecha because the morning is a time of God's kindness. In the morning, we speak of God's kindness. This is an important rule-we can always hope because of Hashem's kindness and ability to give for free. But we have to realize that it's for free. The Midrash Raba in Devarim 2,4 us there were no greater prophets than Moshe and Yeshaya, and they both came to God with the request for a free gift, as we see Yeshaya says in our pasuk, and similarly, Moshe started off his 515 prayers with the word V’Ethanan , which Rashi tells us means Matnat Hinam/something for free. The Pesikta Rabati (Parasha 34) tells us that when a person hopes to God, that gives him power. But he explains L’Berakim differently. Not Boker , as a time of kindness , like the Chida said, but rather, he says L’Bekarim refers to people that are consistent and get up every single morning, constantly hoping for God's salvation . The consistency is what brings it. They’re at it L’Bekarim/every single morning, day after day, not giving up. Like yeshua kivinu kol hayom . We say that in the prayer of asking for God's redemption, and our reason that we should be redeemed is because our hope is constant. Kaveh El Hashem, hope to Hashem, Strengthen your heart, be courageous and again, kaveh el Hashem constant hoping to Hashem. So we need to not give up on our hope. And if it didn't happen today, we hope it will happen tomorrow. LaBekarim / every single morning. The Chatam Sofer says ( Devarim 28,10) that there is a rule that if you pray for somebody else and you need that thing as well, then you get answered first. And he says, what are we hoping for? We're hoping Lecha Kivinu/we're hoping for You, for Your salvation. And because we're hoping for Hashem’s salvation, then Ata Yeshuatenu/ God will save us when we need it, through us constantly yearning for the salvation of God. Because, as we say, God is also in galut , God's also in trouble. And if we're hoping for God's glory to be brought to the world, then we will also be saved from our problems. Finally, there’s another way to read l (we're always looking for different nuances) Heyeh Zeroam/He will be their strength. Sefer Torat HaMincha , 38th Derash (written by a student of the Rashba, a Rishon) cites a pasuk in Hoshea 7,15 that says, I gave you suffering . I gave you yisurim , I gave you difficulty . But that difficulty brought them strength. It's like when you lift weights. It hurts; you’re a little Charley horse, but that exertion strengthens your muscles. As the saying goes, No pain, no gain. Hashem is telling us, ‘ The only reason I am bringing these difficulties is to strengthen your muscles.’ He says that's what l Heyeh Zeroam L’Bekarim means . You’ll be strong in the morning. After you get through this difficult night, after you get through this
