On Friday: Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans, 6pm in Coffs Harbour, Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers, 8pm at Suncorp Stadium. And in football – EURO 2024 results this morning: Netherlands 3-0 Romania and in an upset Austria 1-2 Turkiye. Switzerland, Germany, England, Spain, France and Portugal are already into the quarters; now joined by Netherlands and Turkiye. In Sports Biz: July 01 every year marks the payment of serious money in ongoing salary deferrals for several former MLB stars including:· Bobby Bonilla who receives US$1.2Million annually from the New York Mets from 2000 until 2035, plus a second deferral agreement with the Orioles at US$500,000 each year from 2004-2028.Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will receive the final US$3.6M from a 16-year deferral agreement with the Reds.Manny Ramirez will receive US$2M from the Red Sox as part of a 16-year deferral pact running through 2026.Chris Davis will receive US$9.1M from the Orioles as part of deferrals contained within his prior US$161M contract. According to Spotrac, Davis has another US$40M due from the team between now and 2037. Some of these payments are well in excess of the 2024 salaries of many current MLB stars.Many more deferral payments are forthcoming from current contracts, which provide short-term financial flexibility for teams and longer-term security for players. All of these contracts, however, pale in comparison to the US$680Million in total deferrals for Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese baseball phenom agreed to set aside US$68Million of his US$70M annual salary to help keep his new team competitive, and he will be paid that money instead between 2034–2043.At Wimbledon: Andy Murray has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to an ongoing back injury.
