This eBook is the fourth volume in the series entitled “Four Decades Through Thick and Thin – Musings of a Diplomat”. The series is an autobiography of portions of the author's forty years of service with the Indian Foreign Service and its predecessor - the British Indian Foreign Service. While the earlier volumes dwell on the author's postings abroad, this particular volume is based in India – in Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, where the author was on special deputation from the Government of India. The author's sole India posting takes on a special significance as it has to do with fighting against corruption and thoughts on the importance of people in public office being selfless and committed in their service to the common man. .

In this book, the author traces the start of his career as a young man from south India crossing the seas to begin his career in the British-administered states of the Persian gulf. The book takes one back to an era when oil was just being discovered and the war was not yet over.

This book is the second volume in the series, "Four Decades Through Thick & Thin - Musings of a Diplomat" which was started by the Author originally as real life anecdotes told to his family, from his forty years' career as Indian foreign services career official. The current volume is based during the Author's posting to Iran during the years 1948 - 1950. Volume 1 of the series, also published by Smashwords, was based in the Persian Gulf of the mid Nineteen Forties. This book is also written in the author's characteristic style of recounting interesting anecdotes from an age bygone. As in the previous volume, there is a photograph gallery of rare aged snaps from the author's own collection.

This book is the third in a series of books that constitute the Memoirs of a retired Indian Foreign Service officer. The Memoirs recount memorable parts of the author's forty years as a diplomat. This book is based on the author's posting in Moscow during the Soviet era. There are 3 Indian personalities celebrated by the author in this book. Mr. K.P.S. Menon, an epic Indian diplomat who laid the foundation for the lasting friendship between India and Russia, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, the charismatic and peace-loving first prime minister of independent India and Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the noble yet simple first President of the Indian Republic.

The author is a vivid raconteur. His life in different countries as an Indian career diplomat, have been captured in narrative form and will be published as a series of books. This essay is a short snippet extracted from the main memoirs and recounts the author's personal experience with two Indian Saints. As per Indian tradition, the short essay sets the auspicious mark, as a beginning to the main series to be published under the title "Four Decades - Through Thick and Thin".
N Sreenivasan
Mr. N. Sreenivasan was born in Kumbhakonam, Tamil Nadu, India as the eldest son of Sri S. Narayanaswamy Iyer and Smt. Rajammal. His father was an educationist and philanthropist in the town of Nagapattinam. In 1944, Mr. Sreenivasan joined the Persian Gulf cadre of the Government of then, British India. He continued as an Indian career diplomat after Indian Independence, serving in Iran, Germany, the USSR, the USA, Bulgaria, Egypt and Finland. Since retirement in 1986, Mr. Sreenivasan lives in Chennai, India. He is an avid raconteur with an elephantine memory, who brings back to life memories of a diplomatic career, with vividness and humour.In the early morning of 28th June 2017, 3 weeks before his 91st birthday, Mr. Sreenivasan departed for his heavenly abode.
