A fun-loving but inept young man is hired as a ranch hand and soon becomes a favorite of the other cowboys. His handsome bearing and carefree spirit capture the attention of the lady who owns the ranch, and his future brightens. This outlook changes when he plays poker with a wolf-like gambler who forces him to back down while other cowboys watch. It is a sensible decision, but it may brand him as a coward—until he undergoes a change of attitude that leads him to a second game of cards.

When the traveler discovers the son of the rancher has been kidnapped, he agrees to go after the war party accompanied only by the wife and daughter of the rancher. During the pursuit across the plains, a disturbing romantic arises, but it cannot be recognized—they must stay alive.

Sam McNeel is a writer retired from the business world after working in heavy manufacturing, banking operations and consulting, and as a real estate agent. He also has extensive experience as a public speaker and a teacher of Biblical studies. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He now lives in Edmond, Oklahoma with Phyllis, his wife of fifty-eight years.
