    After Walter and a miner they have befriended named Donel shows John the amount of money to be made from the gold without destroying the much needed creek John relents. He even makes plans of how to use part of the money from it to improve the ranch and increase it's size. John finds a treasure himself when he meets beautiful young Millie Randall while in town on business. It's soon discovered he's already met her father. Just as things are about to work themselves out with that there is a terrible loss at the ranch. Little does John know a second loss is in his future.

      The mountains of the American West held many treasures. Precious metals such as gold and silver was taken from the land and the streams by the miners. Animals who's pelts were prized back East  was taken from the forest and the streams by the fur trappers. Some men even found the beauty and solitude of the mountains to be their greatest treasure. This is the story of a man who found his to be what so many others had passed over in their search. His was the land itself. After being driven from his ranch in Texas by men with more money and power. He traveled north to the Bitter Root Mountains in search of hidden valleys he was told of as a child. There he would build his new ranch. None of these treasures came easy in the mountains. There were winters capable of freezing a man to death within a matter of hours, several tribes of hostile Indians who were always on the prowl for scalps. There was flooding streams, grizzly bears and as everywhere a few bad men.  For the man named Hard though, nothing had ever been easy. Why should this be any different.

That meant the first cattle ranchers in these new lands had to push large herds of cattle for many miles to reach the nearest rail head. They crossed vast plains, arid deserts and even mountains. All the while hunting for most of their food, crossing rivers and fighting bands of roving Indians or gangs of bad white men. When a man ask if it had been a hard drive, you knew he had never been on one before or he would know the answer, they all were.

      Gold being found in his mountains was bad enough but in his own ranch valley it was something John Hard wanted no part of. Then he's forced to kill a miner while trying to run him out of the valley and things go from bad to worse very quickly. He and the other men have just came through the toughest winter since his coming to the valley. Now it looks like they'll have to deal with the outlaw brothers of the man he killed and their gang. Nothing ever seems to come easy at the Hard Way.

It don't help that John and her father can't stand each other. Reed Randall finally leaves town but he's not done with Virginia City or with John. Knowing miners are depositing gold in the bank almost daily a daring robbery is planned. It takes place the same day of John and Millie's wedding. Now John has to go after his new wife's father and another outlaw. Maybe one day things will not be so hard but not this one.

    George was born in 1960 in Jefferson County Alabama. The fifth of nine children, eight boys and one girl. The family was raised poor, but not poorly raised. At home, George was taught morals, ethics and respect. Reading, writing and arithmetic at school. Love, honor and obedience to God at church. He grew up on John Wayne movies, country music and the writings of Louis L' Amour, Robert Louis Stevenson, H.G. Wells and Jules Verne.
